Department of Statistics and Community Development participates in the 46th edition of UN Statistical Commission


‘Better Data, Better Lives’ is the 2015 United Nations theme

A delegation from the Department of Statistics and Community Development (DSCD) has concluded its participation in the United Nations 46th session of the Statistical Commission in New York recently.

The delegation, led by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Thani, Chairman of the DSCD and included Mr. Ali Muhbub, Advisor at DSCD, Abdullah Alkadded, the Director of Statistical Sectors at DSCD and Amna Alzaruoni, IT Manager and Engineer at DSCD, attended meetings and seminars on current practices in National Statistical Systems around the world, and international guidelines on statistical organizations.

Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani said, “Attendance at world leading seminar’s such as the United Nations 46th Session of the Statistical Commission is of critical value when planning and implementing the Sharjah General Census 2015. We have gained a great deal of useful information on how to structure and implement our programme from those who have had much experience in conducting a national census. The information obtained here, and the connections made with individuals, will be enormously helpful as we go about gathering the data that will help us plan for and construct a better future for all citizens, residents and visitors to the Emirate of Sharjah.”

During their participation, the delegation was able to attend sessions such as; Assessing country profiles of National Statistical Systems and Good practices in National Statistical Systems, which gives examples of how countries are implementing the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics, in order to assist countries in the development of their own national statistical system.

The Department of Statistics and Community Development will be implementing the Sharjah Census 2015 which is being rolled out later this year. The census will include data on inhabitants, residential units and facilities within the Emirate of Sharjah and will be conducted in collaboration with various public organizations and entities.

“The Sharjah Census 2015 is necessary for future growth and development of the emirate enabling us to obtain all the necessary data required for decision making and strategic planning,” added Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani. “Our national census will be conducted to the highest standards, implementing best practice and ensuring all data is sensitively and confidentially handled. We will implement modern green practices utilizing online data gathering wherever possible.”
